Four-spot orchid flowers (Orchis quadripunctata). Each flower consists of three sepals (upper and side petal-like structures),a lower petal called the lip (with four red spots on yellow, sometimes only two clearly seen),and two small petals (upright) enclosing the reproductive structures. The lip attracts pollinators and provides them with a landing platform. This orchid is found in south-eastern Europe. It is a terrestrial orchid (one that grows in the ground). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers | |
