Orchid flower (Masdevallia schmidt-mummii). This flower is distinctive for the growth pattern of the sepals (long, pointed structures). The upper (dorsal) sepal curves downwards over the flower, while the two side (lateral) sepals grow towards and cross each other. Inside the sepals,a central ring of small petals surrounds the reproductive parts. The orange petal is the lip,a specialised petal that attracts pollinators to the flower. This orchid grows in forests in the mountains of Colombia. It is an epiphytic orchid (one that grows in trees). There are more than 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, many of which are grown as ornamental flowers | |
