Juniper cones. Snow-covered cones (purple) on the branch of a juniper tree (Juniperus sp.). The cones resemble berries. Junipers are highly adaptive trees found in much of the northern hemisphere. They are part of the group of plants called gymnosperms, meaning 'naked seeds',that produce their ovules under scales on the outside of the female cone.
