Lichen and Moss. Lichen and moss growing on beech tree bark. Lichen grow in three different shapes. Crustose lichen (flat crusts) are seen at upper right,far left and top centre (grey) and at centre (light green). Foliose lichen have a flat radiating body and are visible at top left corner (brown & green). Fruticose lichen are branched and erect (green,top & bottom right corner and light green,lower & upper left). A moss is seen at lower right (dark green). Lichens are symbiotic plants,where fungal and algal cells cohabit for mutual benefit. Lichens are found where there is little or no atmospheric pollution. Photographed in Northumberland,England
