Light micrograph of the one-celled green alga,Acetabularia sp. This whole organism consists of a single cell, and is the largest cell known to science. Its generic name means "little cup". Seen here is the erect, elongate axis bearing a single fertile whorl (fruiting body) at the apex. At its other extremity, the axis ends in a rhizoid with root-like structures. The rhizoid contains the cell nucleus. Acetabularia, due to its size, has proved important in genetic research: particularly experiments on the role of the nucleus on growth and structure because its large nucleus can easily be removed.
