Witches' broom gall on a turpentine tree (Pistacia terebinthus). These galls are dense bunches of short shoots. The overgrowth has been caused by a parasitic attack by the fungus Taphrina Betulina. The fungus enters the tree and stimulates extra growth in the place of one shoot, and then feeds on this extra growth. Photographed in the South of France | |
