Scarlet caterpillar fungi (Cordyceps milataris) in vegetation. These are the fruiting bodies, the reproductive structures of the fungi. These fungi infect moth and butterfly larvae buried in soil. They parasitise the larvae, eventually killing them, and then live on the rotting matter. Photographed in October on Dartmoor,UK | |
