Wood woolly-foot mushrooms (Collybia peronata) growing in autumn leaf litter. The name derives from the dense hairs covering the stem (centre left). These mushrooms are the inedible fruiting bodies of this fungus. They have gills on the undersides of the caps from which ripe spores drift on the wind to form a new fungal body or mycelium. This fungus is found mainly in deciduous woods, feeding on the decaying leaves in the late summer and autumn. Photographed in Epping Forest,England | |
