Penicillium chrysogenum. Laboratory petri- dish culture of the fungus Penicillium chrysogenum growing on agar. Growth is from the centre outwards. The white areas in the centre and at the edges are the mycelium which forms the body of the fungus. The black is the spores which are the reproductive bodies. Penicillium fungi produce the antibiotic drug penicillin which is an effective agent against a range of diseases caused by bacteria. Penicillin can kill bacteria directly or by inhibiting growth. Petri dish cultures of fungi are commonly used in laboratory experiments | |
