Mildew. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph of hyphae and ripe asci of the leaf mildew Sphaerotheca sp. The hyphae are the tangled filaments which make up a fungal colony. Asci (singular ascus) are the aerial,club-shaped spore-forming bodies seen here. Inside an ascus, eight ascospores develop and are violently discharged when ripe. The ascospores are carried away by air currents and may produce a new fungal colony if they land on appropriate material. Sphaerotheca species are plant parasites, various species invading the leaves and buds of dandelions, hops, gooseberries and roses. Magnification: x300 at 5x7cm size. x1950 at 10x8ins | |
