Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a dividing Staphylococcus epider- midis bacterium. This Gram-positive coccus (round) bacterium is enclosed in an orange cell wall. The membrane developing along its centre marks the line of cell division. S. epidermidis is found on human skin and on many mucous surfaces. It is associated with acne and minor skin lesions, and it colonises plastic, resulting in bacteraemia around catheters and surgical implants like heart valves. These infections often do not respond to antibiotics,so the implants must be removed. Magnification: x58,000 at 6x7cm size. x200,000 at 8x10ins | |
