Shigella bacteria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of rod-shaped bacteria,Shigella sp.,which cause dysentery. Dysentery, affecting mainly the large intestine, varies in severity from a mild attack of diarrhoea to a severe illness. Until the introduction of the sulphonamide drugs in the late 1930s,it was a killer disease all over the world. It can still be fatal for the young, elderly and malnourished. The infection is spread by flies, direct contact, and water contaminated by faeces containing the bacillus. Magnification unknown | |
