IEM uses antibodies to attach specific molecules (in this case gold particles) to particular parts of the cell. Here,protein particles on the surface of this Gram-positive cell are seen as dark red spots. Lactic acid producing bacteria such as this are used extensively in the food industry,in areas such as bread,cheese and yoghurt production.
