These spiral-shaped bacteria (spiro- chaetes) lack rigid cell walls. Pathogenic species of Treponema include T. pallidum which causes syphilis; T. carateum which causes the skin disease "pinta" common in tropical America: T. pertenue which causes yaws in Africa.
