False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Clostridium tetani, the species of Gram-positive,spore-forming,rod-like bacteria that causes tetanus. The spherical endospore appears as a swelling on top end of each bacterium: 1 resting endospore is produced from 1 vegetative bacterial cell & germinates to give rise to a single cell (ie overall process is not one of multiplication). C. tetani exists harmlessly in intestines of man and animals but becomes pathogenic (causes tetanus) when introduced through a wound (where the anaerobic environment necessary for growth is found).
