False-colour scanning electron micrograph of the fibrils which make up glass fibre paper,a specialist material widely used as an inert filtration medium in scientific laboratories. Inhalation of fibrils such as those visible here can provoke a variety of inflammatory responses in the lungs. Long term exposure can lead to permanent fibrotic damage to the tissues. Glass fibres are produced by drawing melted glass into thin fibres some 0.005 - 0.01 millimetres in diameter. The fibres may be spun into threads and woven into fabrics which are both strong and resistant to corrosion and fire. Magnification: x340 at 35mm size | |
