Bortezomib cancer drug. Computer model of a molecule of the cancer drug bortezomib. This drug, which is marketed as Velcade,is used to treat a type of cancer known as myeloma. Myeloma is a cancer of blood plasma cells found in bone marrow, and can spread to cause multiple cancers in different areas of the body. Bortezomib belongs to a class of drugs, called proteasome inhibitors, that help to prevent the cancers that result from protein breakdowns. Approval was granted in the USA in 2003 and in Europe in 2004. The molecule's chemical formula is C19.H25.B.N4.O4. The atoms are shown as colour-coded spheres in this space-filled model: carbon (grey),hydrogen (yellow),boron (green),nitrogen (dark blue) and oxygen (red) | |
