Lipase. Computer artwork of a molecule of lipase. This is a type of biological catalyst (or enzyme) which is involved in the metabolism of fatty substances. The colour-coding relates to the primary structure of the enzyme. It is made up of a combination of amino acids linked end to end. Each amino acid is shown as a different colour. The large thick cylinders represent helices in the molecule's shape, while the flat arrows (lower right) represent a sheet region. Lipase is released from the pancreas and small intestine during digestion, and its function is to break down fats into fatty acids and glycerol | |
