First production of antihydrogen. The first eleven atoms of antimatter - antiatoms - were made in 1995 at the PS210 experiment at CERN,the particle physics laboratory near Geneva. The computer display shows 23000 events (top panel) observed by the experiment at CERN's Low-Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR). Careful analysis reduced these to 94 events (central panel) with energies expected for an antiproton and a positron, the constituents of an atom of antihydrogen. Further analysis reduced this to 11 events where the energies of two gamma rays detected were consistent with electron- positron annihilation, signature of the first man-made atoms of antimatter | |
