Electron-neutrino and muon-neutrino. Two types of neutrino are compared in computer displays from the NOMAD detector at CERN,the particle physics lab outside Geneva. In the displays, the detector is outlined in green and blue. At top,a neutrino enters unseen from left and interacts to produce 4 particle tracks; one leads to a large deposit of energy (yellow spikes at right) that suggests it is an electron, produced by an electron-neutrino. At bottom,an unseen neutrino interacts to produce many tracks; one travels through the detector to far right, indicating it is a muon produced by a muon-neutrino. Neutrinos are members of the lepton family of elementary particles | |
