Special effects zoom photograph of a particle interaction in the UA1 detector at CERN,the particle physics laboratory outside Geneva. The UA1 detector, which discovered the W & Z particles in 1983,records the collisions of protons & anti-protons accelerated to very high energy in CERN's SPS collider. When a proton and antiproton collide, they annihilate into pure energy which rematerialises as a large number of new particles that spray out in all directions. The photograph symbolises the explosive appearance of such interactions. The detector itself is outlined in red | |
