Computer display of the decay of a bottom quark in the TASSO detector at the DESY particle physics lab,Hamburg. The small circle at centre represents the beam pipe in which an electron & a positron, accelerated in DESY's PETRA collider, have met & annihilated at the centre. Their energy rematerialises as a number of particles, including a bottom quark which immediately combines with an antiquark to form a B meson. The meson lives much too briefly to be visible, but careful analysis shows its presence. One of the clues is track 3,a muon which penetrates the outer layers of the detector to reach the muon detector (not shown) | |
