Matter/antimatter particle collision. Computer display of jets of particles created when matter and antimatter collide & annihilate in a particle accelerator at CERN,the European particle physics laboratory near Geneva. The display shows an event in which two quarks have collided & annihilated into pure energy, rematerialising as two new quarks which in turn decay into two high-energy jets (blue & purple tracks) of hadronic matter such as pions. The display also shows the yellow & green tracks of lower energy particles produced in the event. The red outline shows the UA1 detector, which is the size of a 3-storey house,in which the collision occurred. (Run 7265,Event 697) | |
