Computer display of a two-jet event in the Mark-J detector at the PETRA collider at DESY,the part- icle physics laboratory in Hamburg. An electron & positron have collided & annihilated into pure energy which rematerialises in the form of a quark & an antiquark. These live too briefly to be visible, but are recognised when they immediately decay into two oppositely directed jets of other particles. The display shows a cross-section of the Mark-J detector, with the beam pipe where the original collision occured marked by the white cross at centre. Around it are drift tubes & shower counters (blue),drift chambers (green),lead glass detectors (blue),& the magnet (black). (Event 3904) (May '84) | |
