Electronic display of a cosmic ray neutrino event in the IMB (Irvine-Michigan-Brookhaven) proton decay detector in the Morton salt mine near Cleve- land,Ohio. The display represents the detector,a tank 21 cubic metres in size filled with ultrapure water & located some 600 metres underground. The walls of the tank are lined with photo-multiplier tubes which detect & multiply flashes of Cerenkov light emitted when particles pass through the water. Cosmic neutrinos can pass through the Earth as if it was not there. This one interacted with a particle in the IMB tank, producing a circle of coloured stars (bottom) where it entered. The IMB detects about one such neutrino event per day | |
