Electronic display of a two-track neutrino event in the IMB detector on 5.9.82. (For details of IMB detector & how to interpret display, see description of A142/156 & also A142/159 for details of this particular form of display as two hemispheres). The two- track neutrino produces a ring of light in each hemisphere, which is just the type of result the IMB physicists are looking for in the simplest type of proton decay (proton decays into positron & neutral pion). In a real proton decay event, the two rings of light would be precisely back-to-back,whereas in this event the ring in the right-hand hemisphere is off- centre, leading to the conclusion that this event is in fact caused by a two-track neutrino.
