Z particle decay. "Megatek" computer graphic display of an event from the UA1 detector at CERN,the European particle physics laboratory outside Geneva, showing the decay of a Z particle into two electrons (long white & lilac lines) & some other particles (green). The Z particle, which lives too briefly to be visible itself, was created in a high-energy collision of a proton & antiproton in CERN's Super-Proton-Synchrotron (SPS) collider. The electrically neutral Z is a gauge boson & one of the carriers of the weak force. Its discovery at CERN in 1983 confirmed the "electroweak" theory that unifies the electromagnetic & weak forces. The display outlines the UA1 detector in red. (Run 6059,Event 1010) | |
