Early CERN results,1959. Preparation of a display of a particle collision event observed at CERN,the European particle physics laboratory near Geneva,Switzerland. The black lines radiating out from the centre are the 26 particles produced in the collision. These collisions are produced by accelerating particles to extremely high energies before colliding them with a target. The collision forms new particles that allow physicists to study the fundamental structure of matter. The display is for a ceremony to mark the opening of the proton synchrotron, the accelerator that produced this collision. CERN was founded in 1954 | |
