Collider Detector Facility (CDF). Researchers work on the CDF particle detector at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Illinois,USA. The black arches, which have been removed to the side, contain calorimeters. Each calorimeter consists of photomultipliers and electronics which record energies of subatomic particles produced in proton-antiproton collisions. The calorimeters surround the region in the detector where the collisions occur. Fermilab accelerates particles to 1000 GeV (giga-electronvolts) in the Tevatron,a 2km-diameter particle collider. Commissioned in 1985,the CDF weighs 4500 tons and was built by scientists from the USA,Japan and Italy | |
