Gargamelle bubble chamber. Engineers assembling the Gargamelle bubble chamber at CERN (European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva,Switzerland. The pistons that compressed the liquid in the chamber are being lowered into place. This particle detector was built in the late 1960s to detect neutrinos. It was filled with pressurised freon, which reveals the tracks of charged particles as trails of tiny bubbles when the pressure is reduced. As neutrinos have no charge they had to be detected by their interactions with charged particles in the liquid. In 1973 this experiment confirmed the electroweak theory of the standard model by detecting neutral currents | |
