CERN detector mirror,1973. Researcher reflected in a mirror used in a streamer chamber detector at CERN,the European particle physics laboratory in Switzerland. The mirror is inclined at 45 degrees to reflect radiation, which will be recorded by a camera. The radiation is produced by sparks in the streamer chamber where a gas is ionized by the high-energy particles being studied. This detector is being used in the Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR) collider (operating 1971-1984),where beams of particles collided to produce new particles, allowing physicists to study the fundamental structure of matter. Optical recording was later replaced by electronics. CERN was founded in 1954 | |
