Building CERN detector. Workers at CERN in 1970,assembling the magnet coil for the Big European Bubble Chamber (BEBC). CERN,the European particle physics laboratory near Geneva,Switzerland, was founded in 1954. BEBC operated from 1973-1984. The actual bubble chamber (3.7 metres wide) fitted in the central space. It contained liquid hydrogen which boiled into bubbles as high-energy particles from accelerators passed through it. The magnet, which formed a field of 3.5 Tesla, curved the path of charged particles, helping physicists identify them. Many millions of bubble chamber images were used to study the fundamental structure of matter. Modern detectors have replaced bubble chambers | |
