L3 particle detector. View along the accelerator beamline into the L3 particle detector at CERN,the European particle physics laboratory near Geneva. L3 is one of the experiments on the 27-km circumference Large Electron Positron (LEP) ring accelerator. Electrons travelling at almost the speed of light enter the detector here, and are focused by the two blue magnets (lower right) onto a point deep in the heart of the detector. There they collide with positrons arriving from the opposite direction. Scientists use L3 to detect the exotic subatomic particles produced in these high-energy collisions, and to infer their interactions | |
