OPAL particle detector. Technicians inspecting the interior of part of the OPAL particle detector at CERN,the European particle physics lab near Geneva. The component seen here is half of the cylindrical electromagnetic energy-measuring (EM) calorimeter. It is made from hundreds of blocks of lead glass. Electrons and photons from high-energy particle collisions are stopped by these blocks, emitting light as they do so. The intensity of light is used to gauge the particle's energy. OPAL is one of four major experiments on the Large Electron Positron (LEP) collider at CERN | |
