WA1 neutrino detector. Technicians working on the WA1 neutrino detector at CERN,the particle physics laboratory near Geneva. The outside of the detector is lined with cylindrical photomultiplier tubes. The detector measured the scattering of high-energy neutrinos as part of research into gluons, the particles which carry the strong force that binds atomic nuclei together. Neutrinos are fundamental particles which have no charge and little or no mass. The WA1 experiment, led by Jack Steinberger, determined the distribution of gluons in particles (nucleons) within atomic nuclei. Photographed in 1981 | |
