View along one side of the huge neutrino detector at Brookhaven National Laboratory,Long Island,New York,in 1980. Protons generated in the AGS (Alternating Gradient Synchrotron) accelerator strike a target to produce a beam of neutrinos which travel through 40 metres of solid steel before striking the detector. The steel excludes all particles except neutrinos. The detector is 21 metres long & as tall as a two-storey building. It consists primarily of sandwiched calorimeters & proportional drift chambers, with gamma catchers & a muon spectrometer at the end. It mainly studies neutrino-electron scattering events | |
