Linac. View of the Linear Accelerator (Linac) at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) near Chicago,USA. The Linac takes protons from a pre-accelerator at an energy of 750 electronvolts and accelerates them to an energy of 400 million electron volts (MeV). The Linac consists of a series of electrodes which create varying electric fields within the accelerator. These electric fields give the protons a series of electrical kicks to accelerate the protons. The protons are then injected into Fermilab's Tevatron accelerator which can accelerate protons & antiprotons up to an energy of 1 teraelectronvolt (TeV). Photographed in 1993 | |
