Fermilab Tevatron particle accelerator. View along the 6.3km long circular tunnel housing the Main Ring and Tevatron proton-antiproton accelera- tors. They are at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) near Chicago,USA. The Main Ring consists of 1000 red and blue conventional magnets, and sits above the Tevatron ring of 1000 superconducting magnets (one seen at lower left). The Main Ring accelerates protons and antiprotons to 150 billion electronvolts (150 GeV),before feeding them into the Tevatron ring where they are accelerated to one trillion eV (1 TeV). The particles are then smashed into targets or collided with each other. Photographed in 1990 | |
