The circular tunnel containing the Tevatron accelerator at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab),Illinois,is outlined by the lights of a car driving around the service road above the tunnel. The Tevatron is 2 kilometres in diameter & contains two accelerators one above the other. The top accelerator uses ordinary magnets & accelerates protons to 150 GeV. It then passes them to the lower accelerator, with superconducting magnets, which accelerates them up to 1000 GeV (1 TeV). Beside the service road is a circular "moat" of water to cool the magnets. This 15-minute exposure was taken from the top of Fermilab's 16-floor administration building | |
