A view of the PIA particle storage ring at DESY,the German particle physics laboratory in Hamburg. PIA stands for "Positron-Intensity-Accumulator". It takes positrons (the antiparticle of the electron) at an energy of 450 MeV from a linear accelerator & accumulates them & modifies their structure so that they form tight, dense bunches ready for injection into a larger particle accelerator. Built in 1978,PIA consists of 8 bending magnets,8 quadrupole focusing magnets & 8 sextupole focusing magnets. The pink magnet in this fisheye view is a sextupole | |
