The underground circular path of the Large Electron-Positron collider (LEP) at CERN,the European particle physics laboratory,is marked by the dotted line on this aerial photograph of the countryside north of Geneva. Scheduled to start operations in 1989,LEP will accelerate counter- rotating beams of electrons & positrons to an energy of 50 GeV per beam. The larger of the solid circles marks the tunnel of CERN's existing proton- antiproton collider, the SPS,with the main CERN site (Site Meyrin) to its left. The SPS also serves experiments at Site Prevessin. The dashed line follows the border between France (top) & Switzerland. Geneva airport is in the foreground | |
