Barnacle base. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the base of a barnacle. The barnacles is a crustacean that begins life as a free-swimming larva. Eventually the larva settles head down on a hard surface such as a rock or another barnacle. Cement glands in the barnacle's antennae produce very strong glue that anchors it to the surface. The adult barnacle grows a shell and remains in the same place for the rest of its life, feeding by filtering food from the surrounding water. This image shows part of the base of a juvenile barnacle that has been dislodged from its position on another barnacle. Magnification: x230 when printed 10cm wide | |
