Kelp gulls (Larus dominicanus vetula),or southern black-backed gulls, building a nest. These African kelp gulls, considered distinct from kelp gulls found elsewhere in the world, are found on the coastline of southern Africa. They breed in the same region, nesting on the ground. These scavenging seabirds feed on rubbish and dead fish from fishing boats. They also prey on the young of other seabirds such as penguins. They are aggressive birds, fighting over food with a loud mewing call. Gulls range from 30-60 centimetres in length, with the kelp gull being one of the larger gulls.
