Mallard ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) taking off. These ducks inhabit wetlands throughout the Northern hemisphere. They are the most abundant and widespread duck in Europe. The mallard, which can grow up to 70 centimetres in length, feeds on aquatic vegetation, insects and worms. Some populations migrate to the south for the winter, although many stay resident if there is abundant food and shelter. Photographed in November in Gloucestershire | |
