False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a greenhouse red spider mite Tetranychus sp. climbing over the surface of a leaf,Weigela florida. A plant parasite & economic pest, this mite is found on vegetable crops, fruit trees & flowers. They feed on sap from leaves, causing them to mottle, turn yellow & fall off. Spider mites spin a web across the leaf surface which secures & protects them against predators. They are chemically controlled using organophosphorus, although some resistance has developed. Another method is biological control, using a natural predator,a mite called Phytoseiulus persimilis. Magnification: x75 at 6x4.5 cm size | |
