Einstein@Home,screen saver computer graphicshowing the night sky. Einstein@Home is a volunteer computing project designed to search for gravitational waves. Volunteer,or distributed, computing allows scientists to replicate supercomputing power by utilising idle time on personal computers owned by the public. When a computer is idle, data from the LIGO and GEO 600 laser interferometers are sent to the user's computer. The screen saver performs calculations and sends the results back to a base server. Gravitational waves are ripples in space-time created by spinning neutron stars (pulsars) or colliding black holes. They were first predicted by Albert Einstein in his General Theory of Relativity. Einstein@Home runs on the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) | |
