Radar-tracked bee. Image produced by a conventional radar system when tracking the flight of a tagged bumble bee,Bombus sp.. The bee has been tagged with an antenna which reflects radar waves at the same frequency at which they arrive at the bee. However, the bee's signal has been swamped by reflections from bushes and buildings, making tracking impossible. An improved system has been developed at the National Resources Institute in Malvern,UK,by Joe Riley to test the smallest-ever radar antenna. The tracking of the bee forms part of pollination research. The radius of the outermost circle is 463 metres; image resolution is +/- 7m. (Compare with G355/046) | |
