Human retina. Light microscope footage showing a section through part of the retina of the human eye. The camera pans from the inner retinal layers to the pigmented epithelium layer (brown). The retina is a light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. It contains specialised photoreceptor cells known as rods and cones (right of the pigmented epithelium). Light falling on the retina is relayed as electrical signals from the rods and cones through various layers of nerve cells (right). The optic nerve carries the signals to the brain which processes them into visual images. | |
