High-speed footage of a male ruddy darter dragonfly (Sympetrum sanguineum) returning to his vantage point. As he descends with legs extended, he appears to change his mind in the absence of external stimuli, retracts his legs and flies backwards briefly. He then turns his head, engaging binocular vision to select another landing point. This dragonfly uses high vantage points like this to watch out for females, rival males and flying insect prey. Filmed in Surrey, UK, at 750 frames per second (slowed down 30 times). | |
