Common northern comb jelly (Bolinopsis infundibulum) swimming among plankton. This large comb jelly is a predator, using rows of cilia both to move and to waft plankton into its mouth. These cilia also refract light, producing iridescent colours. As its name implies, it is common in cold northern seas, from the Arctic Ocean to the Atlantic as far south as the Mediterranean and the Gulf of Maine, and also from the Bering Sea to California in the Pacific. Filmed in the White Sea, Russia. | |
